Find Adventure at the Porter County Museum of History

museum-spring-2013Spring is around the corner, as are new exhibits at the Porter County Museum of History and it promises to be a spring of adventure. Throughout the last few months of winter, the exhibit teams have been working on bringing a story to life that has not often been told, even by the museum itself: Porter County's story. Soon that will change. On March 24th, the Museum will open it’s newest featured exhibit, We are Porter County and everyone is invited. From the first moment when county commissioners sat around a kitchen table plotting a map of the county, to the advent of the steel mills, to problems that face the county today, the exhibit will highlight the defining themes in the county's history, explaining how we came to be where we are today.

Just across the hall, is a story bearing witness to the ongoing spirit of adventure in Porter County. Four years ago, Mary Catterlin decided she wanted to make a boat with her own two hands. She then decided to sail this boat around Lake Michigan. Last summer, she and her longtime friend Amy Lukas made the dream a reality. They took their dugout canoe, Makeba, and over the course of 93 days circumnavigated Lake Michigan. Come hear the story of the incredible journey that began, quite literally, in their own backyard!

The opening reception for both exhibits is open to the public. It will be generously catered by Don Quijote and held at the museum, March 24 from 1-4pm. Our reception is free to the public, but it is necessary to RSVP in advance at info@pocomuse.org.
