The Purdue University North Central Office of Graduate and Extended Learning and Department of English and Modern Languages, in partnership with the Michigan City Community Arts Society of Trinity, will offer a silent film seminar series in October.
PNC Associate Professor of English Jerry Holt will host the three-part seminar exploring the diversity of the silent film age and show seldom-seen masterpieces of film history. Each event will begin at sundown in the 1929 Renaissance Revival-style Barker Hall, 600 Franklin St, Michigan City. On Oct. 3, “Sherlock Jr.,” the 1924 film starring Buster Keaton will be screened; on Oct. 10, “Sunrise,” the 1927 film directed by F.W. Murnau will be screened and on Oct. 17 The Penalty,” the 1920 film starring Lon Chaney will be screened.

Matthew Kubik, representative of the Community Arts Society of Trinity, explained, “For those on the fringes of society in the early 20th century the doors of opportunity were often tightly closed. However, the emerging industry of film welcomed the outlaw, the outcast, the immigrant, the destitute and the desperate. The result was the new art form of cinema, a new culture of celebrity and unimaginable wealth for those involved.”
