Reception Planned for Borders Sculpture at Valparaiso University

Reception_for_Borders_Sculpture_at_Valpa-1Valparaiso University's Brauer Museum of Art welcomes Borders, an installation of outdoor sculptures by renowned Icelandic artist Steinunn Thararinsdattir. An opening reception and artist talk, free and open to the public, will be held Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. in the Brauer Museum of Art.

After popular displays in Chicago, New York City, Seattle, and Dallas, Borders comes to Valparaiso University to intrigue campus and community viewers with its life-sized figures and themes of sameness and difference.

Gregg Hertzlieb, Director/Curator of the Brauer Museum of Art, said about Borders, "After their successful time in downtown Chicago by the Art Institute, with the duration of the display extended twice due to popular demand, Borders comes to a peaceful campus setting where I think all who see the sculptures will be impressed and inspired."

The 11 pairs of life-sized sculptures, made of cast iron and aluminum, represent contrasts in life and the human condition, light and shadow, heavy and light, heaven and earth. According to Thararinsdattir, the installation engages the viewers in a direct and intimate way and can be seen as symbols of humanity and cultural diversity.

The contemporary Icelandic artist has been working as a sculptor for 35 years and has displayed her work in prominent exhibitions around the world. The figures in “Borders” are based on her eldest son's body and explore the dichotomy of human existence that reflects both division and unity.

The installation was made possible by the vision and support of Josephine L. Ferguson '46. Visit valpo.edu/artmuseum for more information about the Brauer Museum of Art's exhibitions and events.
