Lakefront Art Festival Promises to be the Creative

Lakefront-Art-Fest-3Coming into its 34th year, the Lubeznik Center for the Arts Lakefront Art Festival has celebrated art of all types that come from the creative minds of artists who hail from all across the country.

Over 100 artists will set up shop at Washington Park in Michigan City and patrons will get satisfy all five senses with art, music, food, and friends. The festival is a two-day event on August 15 and 16, mingling the talent of America with the sunshine and beautiful lakefront of Michigan City.

“Having the Lakefront Art Festival is important in two ways,” Amy Davis, Marketing Director of Lubeznik Center said. “First, it’s our second largest fundraiser. It supports the things that we do here. It helps us to move forward. Second, it provides an entry point into the arts. People who won’t normally seek out arts may come to the festival from the beach or see it driving by. It’s an important way to make arts approachable in the community.”

Types of art that can be found at the Lakefront Art Festival are as follows:

2-dimenisional Fine Craft Jewelry Photography Sculptural Objects Wearable Art

Artwork is juried into the festival by three jurors in the art field. From there three winners are chosen for each of the aforementioned categories.

“We selected 100 artists to attend the festival,” Davis said. “Six more judges will walk around on the first day of the festival, looking at all of the artwork and from there will determine the winners. $3,000 is divided among the winners who take first, second, and third place in each category.”

About 5,000 people come to the festival each year. Patrons are able to purchase pieces that local artists create and show them off in their homes or on their bodies. Artists will be available to talk about their work and explain their visions and muses. Proceeds generated from the festival will go to fund Lubeznik Center for the Arts programs, exhibitions, and educational events all across Northwest Indiana.

Cost to attend is $4 per person and children under 12 are free. New this year are 2-day passes for $6. Free shuttle service will be offered from different locations.
