Artists to Celebrate Michigan City History

Michigan City has a long and colorful history as a tourist destination and lakeshore community, attracting artists and creative characters as part of its diverse population.

A new exhibit opening this month at Lubeznik Center will celebrate Michigan City's architectural, cultural and creative history. The North End: Lubeznik Center Area Artists Assocation 30th Anniversary features more than 40 works by local artists focused on the North End corridor of Michigan City. From the South Shore tracks up Franklin Street and through Washington Park, each artist chose a unique location for inspiration and interpreted the site through their own medium and style. Works of photography, painting, sculpture, poetry and music are all represented in the exhibit ― emphasizing the rich contribution of the arts, and artists, to the character of the North End.

The Area Artists Association is a juried organization that was formed in 1980 with the goal of fostering art and artists in the community. It serves as an umbrella group for artists to come together to network, exhibit, and engage the larger community in the arts. Long affiliated with the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, the Area Artists Association was responsible for some of the first outreach programs at the Center. The organization currently boasts over 30 members from the region, and holds monthly public presentations on various arts topics at Lubeznik Center.

The North End: Lubeznik Center Area Artists Assocation 30th Anniversary runs from September 18 through November 7. A free opening reception on September 25, from 6―8 p.m. (Chicago time) will feature a live musical, multi-media performance of Sun Rising Over the Dunes by Silver Rain, plus opportunities to meet the artists, mix and mingle.
