Saving the Planet One Container at a Time

ALS-CompostablesDiners know Lemon Tree Mediterranean Grill for its fresh ingredients in its many flavorful offerings. Chef and owner David Wodrich, along with his wife Lisa, have created a place with an incredible array of dishes through Third Coast Spice Café and now Lemon Tree, bringing Mediterranean cuisine to Northwest Indiana. Along with caring for their customers’ taste buds, the restaurant cares for the source of the food: the earth!

Diners at Lemon Tree may not pay much attention to the bowls with lids for dining in and the clamshell containers for to-go meals, but each of those items are biodegradable and non-toxic, provided by AL&S Compostables. “We wanted to do our part for the environment,” stated Wodrich. “I chose AL&S because they were the closest company that could provide me with a completely compostable container.”

Not only is AL&S helping to reduce waste, the company partners with 20 Liters, an organization that provides a person in Rwanda one month of clean water for every case that is sold. For the first half of 2013, Lemon Tree’s purchase from AL&S provided one person clean water for 20 months.

Continuing the theme of being kind to our earth, Lemon Tree also utilizes boxed water to help lessen the amount of plastic used. This attitude carries over to Third Coast Spice Café, as the eatery offers 90 Day compostable to go forks, knives, spoons, cups, and lids. “We are always looking for ways to be better to the planet at both Lemon Tree and Third Coast Spice Café!
