Col. John Stevens III
(1749-1838)

"Father of American Railroads"

Although Col. John Stevens III was appointed as a Captain at age 27 and served in Washington's Army, he was also an American lawyer, engineer, and inventor. He was also influential in the creation of the U.S. Patent law.

In 1806 he built the "Phoenix", a steamboat that became the first to successfully navigate the open ocean. But he spent most of his time persuading officials on the importance of connecting the United States together through a Railroad system. He felt this is was what the country needed to be truly "United". He campaigned tirelessly that this rail system would be superior to all other forms of travel. He also built a steam locomotive capable of hauling passenger cars and in 1815 received the first charter to build a rail line in New Jersey.
