John Adams (1735-1826)

"Posterity!

John-AdamsYou will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven, that I ever took half the Pains to preserve it."

John Adams was an American Founding Father, statesman, diplomat, and a leading advocate of American independence from Great Britain. He came into prominence in the early stages of the American Revolution and played a leading role in persuading Congress to declare independence.

In 1776 he assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence. Throughout his career, he was a champion of the establishment and strength of an American Navy. He was so active in forwarding the nations naval interests that he is often called the father of the Navy. Later in 1780 he wrote the majority of the Massachusetts Constitution. Adams revolutionary credentials secured him two terms as George Washington's vice president and then he was elected the second president of the United States in 1796. Adams was the first president to reside in the executive mansion that eventually became known as the White House.
