Clara Barton
(1821-1912)
"I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them"

Clara Barton was a very shy and timid child, so much that her mother hired a cousin to teach her social skills and develop her femininity. When she grew up, she became a teacher, worked in the U.S. Patent Office, and became an independent nurse during the American Civil War. She was never married and built a career helping others in need. While serving as an independent nurse during the war, she risked her life to bring supplies to support soldiers in the field. Clara was nicknamed "the angel of the battlefield" for her aid efforts. After the war ended, she worked for the war department helping to reunite missing soldiers with their families. In 1881, at age 60, she founded the American Red Cross Society, served as its first president, and led the society for the next 23 years. We Salute Clara Barton for earning her place as one of the most honored woman in American History...
