Third Annual St. Baldrick’s Event to Take Place at Valparaiso University

mikeavery2April 21, 2013 marks the third annual St. Baldrick's event to take place at Valparaiso University.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises money and awareness for childhood cancer research all over the world. Volunteers raise money and, if willing, shave their heads to show support and solidarity for children battling cancer.

mikeaveryThe fundraiser kicked off on Tuesday, February 5th, at the Valparaiso University men's basketball game against UIC. Head soccer coach Mike Avery and his son Alex had their heads shaved during halftime of the game, and raised $712 from the game's attendees.

The Valparaiso University event was started in 2011 by student athlete Tom Serratore and the men's soccer team. In 2012, they were able to raise $25,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. This year they are hoping to get the Valparaiso community involved and raise even more for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

Community members can go to http://www.stbaldricks.org/ and search Valparaiso University. From there they can sign up to be a shavee or volunteer, by creating their own team or signing up individually. The community is invited and encouraged to attend the event, and there will be free food, music, games, and a silent auction with some fantastic merchandise. Donations are also welcomed and appreciated, and they can be made online by searching for Valparaiso University at http://www.stbaldricks.org/.
