City of Whiting Hosts Annual Easter Parade, Egg Hunt

The City of Whiting held its Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Parade on Saturday. Children 5 years old or younger hunted for Easter eggs inside the Mary Bercik Memorial Pavilion at Whiting’s Lakefront Park. Children between the ages of 6-12 also hunted for eggs in Whiting’s Lakefront Park at the Symphony Bowl.

“It started with the little ones early and then the older kids got to go later. It was fun, they were running all over the place, I guess you can call it kind of a controlled chaos,” said Whiting resident Mike Nostrav.

Despite the 30-degree morning temperature residents came out to participate in the festivities. Over 300 children participated in this year’s Easter Egg Hunt.

“I think the kids don’t care as long as there is free candy. We had a great turn out this year, I think people are just ready to get outside and ready for it to be more like spring. We made a little over 300 baskets to give to everyone at the end of the hunt and we pretty much almost ran out. Everyone seemed like they had fun seemed to be looking forward to the parade later,” said Whiting Special Events Coordinator Mark Harbin.

At 2 p.m whiting residents gathered on 119th St. - affectionately called "Bunny Row" - to watch the annual Whiting Chamber of Commerce Easter Parade. This year’s Parade featured, the police and fire department, Nathan Hale High School band, floats from local businesses and Disney princesses. This year’s Easter parade saw a rise in attendance despite colder temperatures than last year.

“I think this is the most we’ve ever had in terms of spectators, which is nice considering the weather. We are the only Easter parade in the area and it’s nice that people came out to support us. It’s a good way to bring families out to celebrate our town and to celebrate spring,” said Whiting Chamber of Commerce president Karen Anaszewicz.
