Hobart Chamber Revs Up With 2015 Car Show And Family Fun Day

The Hobart Chamber of Commerce held their 1st Annual Car Show and Family Fun Day on Sunday afternoon at the Elks Lodge 1152 on 61st Avenue in Hobart. Classic car owners, car lovers and families came out to enjoy the wide array of cars on display as well as the many other attractions that the Chamber provided.

“We had to reschedule the event for today from a couple of weeks ago due to some rain showers,” said Lisa Winstead, Executive Director of the Hobart Chamber of Commerce. “It was originally supposed to be held at Festival Park at the same time as the Boat Races but we ended up getting rained out. The Hobart Elks stood up and said, ‘Hey, you can have it here,’ so it’s been a win-win. They get to open their kitchen and bring people in and we get a great place to hold our 1st Annual Car Show.”

>“We had two weeks to put this together,” Winstead said. “That’s not a lot of time but we’re grateful to the Elks and the forty-plus cars that showed up to show off.”

Even with clouds in the sky car lovers made their way out to see a variety of beautiful machines, some of which have never seen a drop of rain. Lucky for them, the clouds held their rain and it was a great day for a car show.

There with his gorgeous 1956 Jaguar Mark VII M was Dan Gurniewicz from Hobart.

“This car hasn’t been wet since 1977 when I bought it,” Gurniewicz said. “The last time I tested the windshield wipers on it I had to go and tap on the wipers themselves because they just hadn’t been used in such a long time. They made 30,500 of these between 1950-1956 and I got this one out in Arizona in ‘77. I’ve put a lot of work into it and if I could get out of it what I’ve put in that would be great, but I’m not counting on it."

He continued "In ‘77 I paid $3000 for it but since then a lot has gone into it. The pastel green Jag came with green suede interior which I redid and I’ve cleaned up and redone the woodwork in the interior. An interesting fact, this car won the 1956 Grand Prix of Monte Carlo.”

John Yelkich, State Farm Agent from Hobart, brought out his incredibly fast, and extremely loud drag car that he’s spent the last fifteen years working on. Yelkich let me climb up and take a seat in it while he fired it up and I can say I’ve never been in a louder, more powerful automobile.

“It’s a replica of a 1948 Fiat Topolino,” Yelkich said. “I’ve owned it since 1999 and right now it has around 625 horsepower. When I got it it was bare bones and I’ve built everything on it except for the engine and the decal lettering. I didn’t get a chance to take it out this summer but in the past I’ve taken it out to the US 41 Drag Strip and over to the drag strip in Joliet, Illinois and had a great time.”

Along with the Car Show, the Chamber had live music from Hybridge, booths from the Garden Club of Hobart, the Hobart Jaycees and Hagerty Insurance, and a Bags Tournament hosted by Tuesday Night Baggers, who host tournaments every Tuesday night at the Elks Lodge. Cash prizes were awarded to the winner of the Bags Tournament and Car Show prizes included: Best In Show, Best In Class, Mayor’s Choice, and Chamber President’s Choice.
