10 Fun Things to Do this Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Theatre Productions, Benefit Concert, Comedy Shows

Each weekend we bring you 10 Fun Things to Do in Northwest Indiana so you are never without something to do! This weekend, the region will play host to a comedy show at Blue Chip Casino, theatre productions from Purdue University North Central, IU Northwest and Crown Point Community Theatre, a concert to benefit the Humane Society of Calumet Area, and fun events from Hoosier Star, South Shore Convention Visitors Authority, Valparaiso University, and Porter County Parks and Recreation!

‘The Miser’ Comes to Theatre Northwest March 27 - April 5 
Theatre Northwest, the performance company of the Indiana University Northwest Department of Performing Arts, is proud to announce its spring production, “The Miser,” a play by Moliere and adapted by Timothy Mooney. The show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., March 27 - 29 and April 2 – 5, and 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 30 at Theatre Northwest on Grant, 3660 Grant St., located one mile west of the main campus at 37th Avenue and Grant Street.

Crown Point Community Theatre to Produce “Time Stands Still”
Crown Point Community Theatre is proud to present the regional Community Theatre premiere of the recent Broadway hit Time Stands Still, by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies (Dinner with Friends, Brooklyn Boy). This riveting work, an insightful portrait of a couple grappling with the wounds of war, will be helmed by Kate Ryan and stars KeriAnne Valukis and Hal Kilgore in the pivotal roles of the photojournalist and war correspondent, with Marc Ryser and Rachel Livingston completing the cast. Time Stands Still runs weekends March 28-30 and April 4-12.

2014 Hoosier Star Auditions 
The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra (LCSO) is looking for contestants for the ninth annual Hoosier STAR competition. The Hoosier STAR competition, sponsored by Horizon Bank and NIPSCO, is open to amateur singers of all musical styles and age groups. Auditions will be on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT) and Sunday, March 30 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. (CDT).

Exploring America: A Food and Wine Pairing Gala
The Calumet Council Boy Scouts of America will be hosting their 1st Annual Wine Pairing Gala to benefit the local Scouting Program. The event is Saturday March 29th 2014 at the Munster Center for Performing Arts. The event includes a five course dinner with featured wines from Wente Vineyards.

Pet Rock 2014 
The Rock 'N' Roll Fundraiser for The Humane Society of Northwest Indiana! Don't miss the huge annual Rock Gala at the beautiful and rustic County Line Orchard's Big Barn. Great live bands, a Grammy Award winner, over 100 celebrity-signed collectable items, food, cash bar and all to help care for and save the homeless animals Humane Society of Northwest Indiana.

Learn To Crochet! 
Participants will learn crochet basics and to chain, progressing over the weeks into making a washcloth and egg ornament. Participants will be provided with yarn, patterns and fiberfill for their egg. Participants will need to provide their own F and H Crochet Hooks

The Big Sell Competitors to Pitch Big Ideas March 29 
The Purdue University Calumet Big Sell Entrepreneurship Competition will bring together innovators and entrepreneurs from across the United States on Saturday, March 29. Participants will be competing for thousands of dollars in cash, accounting, marketing and legal services as well as business plan assistance and office space at the Hammond Innovation Center.

Hilarity for Charity 
The Purdue University North Central Ranting Llamas Improv Troupe and Office of Student Activities will co-host a Hilarity for Charity event on Friday, March 28, in the Library-Student-Faculty Building, Room 144 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is $5 and will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association as part of the Hilarity for Charity national fundraising effort. The public is invited. Additional donations to the Alzheimer's Association will gladly be accepted.

Valparaiso University's Soup Bowl for the Hungry 
Valparaiso University students and faculty will display original artwork in the fourth annual Soup Bowls for the Hungry silent auction. In addition to ceramic bowls, the auction will include digital, painted, and drawn interpretations of bowls. Admission is free, and soup and cornbread will be served.

Veterans of Saturday Night Live 
Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa, Michigan City, Indiana presents the Veterans of Saturday Night Live – Rob Schneider, Tim Meadows and Jon Lovitz -- in a hilarious night of comedy on Saturday, March 29 at 8 pm in the Stardust Event Center.
