Valparaiso resident and lead singer for Christian rock band Sevenglory Kurt Felsman will debut his first solo project, Majesty & Mystery, in December. The album will be available after December 1 via iTunes.
The album is a long time coming for Felsman, who is the Director of Worship at Calvary Church, 1325 Evans Ave., Valparaiso. “I have been writing worship songs for a few years, but the timing has never been right to go to the studio with them.” Full time work with Calvary plus Sevenglory’s touring schedule kept him busy. As more people heard Calvary’s worshipmusic, they persisted in asking where to purchase songs Felsman had written, often not realizing the songs were homegrown rather than covers of other artists.
“I always had to say, ‘Well, that’s not recorded yet,’” he said. “And then came the follow-up question: ‘When?’” With a break in Sevenglory’s touring schedule and encouragement from the church’s leaders, Felsman got into the studio. He finished the project just before beginning work on the second live EP from CalvaryLIVE, the church’s worship band, coming out in spring 2016.
Felsman’s six song collection is centered around the title track, “Majesty & Mystery,” and his aspiration for both his own congregation and other churches: “I want to see people approach God with wonder and awe, to just be blown away by his glory and goodness,” he said. “When we see God that way, it propels our hearts to worship.”
Majesty & Mystery will be pre-released on CD at Calvary Church starting Sunday, November 29, as a thank-you for the church’s support. The album features songs written in collaboration with other church members and local musicians, including Matt Siewert, Felsman’s band mates, Gabe Johannes and Caleb Johannes, and Andi Rozier of Chicago’s Harvest Bible Church and Vertical Church Band.
