10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Popcorn Festival, 9-11 Remembrances, and BalloonFest

33rd Annual Popcorn Festival
The festival returns to downtown Valparaiso, with the Popcorn Panic 5K Walk/5 Mile Run, the Lil Kernel Race, the parade, and great bands filling the downtown with tunes all afternoon!

City of Portage to Commemorate 10 year Anniversary of 9-11
Mayor Olga G. Velazquez along with Portage Fire Chief Tom Fieffer invites the public to join the Portage Police and Fire Departments at Gilbert Park on September 11 for a 10 year 9-11 Commemoration Ceremony.

Valparaiso’s First Responders to Recognize 9-11
The City of Valparaiso’s first responders – Police Department and Fire Department – will host a 9/11 Memorial Ceremony at Foundation Meadows Park on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at 9 am. The ceremony will include a Pledge of Allegiance, led by Cooks Corners Elementary students who will be escorted to the park by the Valparaiso Fire Department Honor Guard.

PNC to Unveil Piece of World Trade Center Steel
Purdue University North Central has become the permanent home of a section of a steel beam that was recovered from the World Trade Center. It will be unveiled during a brief ceremony on Sept. 11. The public is invited to attend. The ceremony will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. A moment of silence will be observed at 7:45 a.m. - the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center - and again, 18 minutes later at 8:03 a.m., the time when the second building was struck.

VNC to Host Community 9-11 Memorial Service
To commemorate the ten year anniversary of 9/11, Valparaiso Nazarene Church will be honoring our local police officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel. The service will focus on the rescuers and hope. Mayor Costas will be a part of the service, as will police chief Michael Brickner and the police honor guard.

Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club 2011 Hot Air BalloonFest
The Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club will conduct our 21st annual Kiwanis Hot Air BalloonFest at the Porter County Fairgrounds. Over 20 colorful, enormous hot air balloons are expected at this year’s event. Nothing is more beautiful than to see these multicolored balloons ascend into the sky at dusk.

Free Lacrosse Clinic to Kick Off Fall Season
In order to promote the upcoming season, a free clinic will be held Saturday, September 10 from 1 to 4 pm at Imagination Glen Park. The clinic will be for girls and boys grades third through 12th. The girls clinic will be run by Brian Southern from the Indiana Girls High School Lacrosse Association. The boys clinic will be run by Chris Berju from Empire Lacrosse from Indianapolis.

Walk for Lupus Now
The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter, will host the Walk for Lupus Now on September 10 at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the annual walk will help increase lupus awareness and education, maintain support groups and support lupus research.

Harley Davidson South Point Cruise In
The car show continues this Friday night, with live music, food from Suzie's Cafe, and a beer garden from Leroy's. Come see the entertainment and the cars, or bring your own to showcase for all to see, either way, it's free for everyone!
