10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: End of Summer Concert, Hoosier Star, and Hunger Games Hike


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do!

End of Summer Concert
The Valparaiso Fire Department will be hosting a HUGE end of summer concert on Friday, September 14, 2012. The concert will feature National Recording Artists, Sevenglory, with special guests Red Umbrella and Urbanites. Lighting and sound provided by J Bros Productions, will be top notch, for the full concert experience. This event will be raising funds for the Valparaiso Firefighters Community Funds.

Each year, the Emerald City Hustle 5K is held in support of healthy living. This year, the Y is asking people within the Duneland community to hustle to build a healthier community by participating in the 2012 Emerald City Hustle. All proceeds from the race will go to the Duneland YMCA Fitness Department to enhance the lives of people within the Duneland community through Healthy Living programs.

Shake, Rattle & Roll with the United Way
The Shake, Rattle & Roll Car and Motorcycle show is Saturday September 15, 2012 at the La Porte County Fair Grounds! Gates open at Noon and there will be fun for all with live entertainment, food and drinks! This is a classic car show sponsored by Sullair. All proceeds benefit United Way.

On September 16, 2012 a Polish Heritage Fest will take place at 11:00am in the International Friendship Gardens. A portion of the proceeds will go to a charity fund, as well as a maintenance fund for the Polish gardens in Friendship Gardens. Enjoy the flavor of Polish cuisine. Vendors will be serving during the entire event. Displays of Polish heritage and Polish related crafts will also be on hand.

2012 Hoosier Star
The Hoosier STAR Orchestra conducted by Phil Bauman will perform a variety of arrangements suited to each singer's unique abilities. There is a wide range of musical types at the 7th annual fundraiser for the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra. Styles include: Pop, Ballads, Rock, Show Tunes, Classical and more. Tunes from Celtic Women, Josh Groban, Celine Dion and Adele along with a dash of Verdi and a traditional Chinese piece will fill the air.

Culvers Presenting Dinner with Scoopie
Culver's of Valparaiso invites your family to a dinner with Scoopie! On Sunday, September 16, come out to meet Scoopie from 5:00 to 7:00 pm! There will be face painting, balloons, games for the kids and a color contest. There will also be the chance to win a free dinner for 4 with Scoopie!

Get your run on this weekend, with the Northwest Indiana Rebel Race, featuring military style obstacles and a celebration with beer and food at the end, the American Red Cross 5K fun run and health walk that helps others, Mash the Creek 10K and 5.5K run that follows a challenging off-road course at Potato Creek State Park, and the Tower Run, an 8K run, 5K walk that showcases the beautiful lakeshore parks and beach communities of Michigan City.

Join S. Joel Norman & Daniel Doss as they perform their Gospel Project at Faith-Valpo during a free, outdoor concert. Rich meaningful hymns delivered by two talented and gifted musicians will provide an evening you won’t forget no matter your age!

The Izaak Walton League will be hosting a special walk and talk at Hawthorne Park in Porter on Saturday, September 15 at 3:30pm. Participants are welcome to come dressed as your favorite character from the Hunger Games books or movie and be ready to learn about the edible plants that Katniss, Prim and Gale needed for survival.

"Junk/Junque": A Duo Art Exhibition
An Art Exhibition inspired by “junk” found in junk shops, antique shops and salvage yards all over the country, showing photography, collage, paintings, sculpture and more. One man’s junk was, or will be, another man’s treasure and looking at junk in different ways is inspiring, interesting and often surprising. The artists’ impressions of "junk" or “junque” are shown in this Exhibition.
