10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Battle of the Badges, Oktoberfest, and Weekend at the Orchard


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do! This weekend a fundraising dodgeball tournament, downtown tailgate, Oktoberfest celebration, orchestra concert, Harvest Festival, fire prevention week kickoff, apple orchard fun, a wine tasting benefit, a 5K walk, and an art walk are all on tap for a fun weekend in Northwest Indiana!

Teams from local police and fire departments will compete in the annual Battle of the Badges dodgeball tournament this weekend. Teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament for the coveted Championship "Battle of the Badges" title. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County- South Haven Unit.

The Great Downtown Tailgate
Join the VCFE and other football fans in a new downtown event this Saturday. The Great Downtown Tailgate will feature a live telecast of the Notre Dame vs. Miami game on the big screen in Central Park Plaza. Admission is free. There will be a beer garden, food tents, and pre-game activities including a zip line and quarterback toss.

Michigan City Oktoberfest
An authentic German Festival, the 2012 Michigan City Oktoberfest will be held October 6 and 7 at the Michigan City Senior Center in Washington Park. This celebration features German and Austrian food and spirits, along with live entertainment both days!

Ivy Tech Auditorium Theater will be the stage for some exciting musical drama on Friday October 5th. South Shore Orchestra will bring you a bit of Halloween spirit with visions of “dancing skeletons” in Dance Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens. Then some melodic sounds complementing the unusual viola da gamba played by soloist Phillip Serna in the US premiere of Rudolph Dolmetsch’s Concertino for Viola da Gamba and Small Orchestra.

Annual Harvest Festival
The 2012 Harvest Festival, sponsored by the Portage Parks & Recreation Department, will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 10am-5pm and Sunday, October 7th from 12-5pm. The event consists of a juried art show, wine, cheese, & chocolate tasting, and live entertainment. Several local musicians will be performing during the festival.

Culver's Supports Valpo Fire Department
Fire prevention week is October 7 through the 13th and Culver's of Valparaiso is supporting the Valparaiso Fire Department! On Sunday, October 7, 10:30 am to 10:00 pm, 10% of all sales for the day will go directly to support the Fire Department! Fire trucks will be at the restaurant giving tours from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Celebrate fall at the orchard this weekend! With apple picking, a petting zoo, two corn mazes, and tasty donuts and apple cider, there's fall fun for everyone at the orchard!

Wines of Northwest Indiana to Benefit Stepping Stone Shelter
The Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, Inc. will host its First Annual Wine Tasting Benefit and Silent Auction on Friday, October 5, 2012 from 7:00pm-10:00pm at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City. Tickets include hors d’oeuvres, entertainment and an opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause and reach out to those in need.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk will take place Sunday, October 7th, at the Old Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso.

First Friday Art Walk
On October 5 from 5pm to 8pm enjoy a stroll through the district and take the art in, courtesy of the Michigan City Mainstreet Association. New this month, the Michigan City Public Library is hosting a 3 full-hour performance creating art renditions symbalizing books and will conclude with a creation of a temporary sculpture.
