10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Big Band Bash, Texas Hold’em, and Art of the Valentine


Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do! This weekend an evening of plays, a big band bash, a sock hop, beans and bags event, arts and crafts fair, Texas hold'em event, art openings, valentine art, and family float night are all on tap for a fun weekend in Northwest Indiana!

Lubeznik Center for the Arts presents Two Playwrights and a Stage for the Friday, February 1, 2013 event of the Uptown Arts District’s First Fridays @ 5 series. Four one-act plays will be the evening’s featured entertainment.

The Chesterton High School Music Department will present an evening of music and dancing that showcases the students of the Chesterton High School Jazz Ensemble. This event, known to the Duneland community as the "Big Band Bash," offers the public a nostalgic dance reminiscent of those held during the 1930's and 40's.

Tri Kappa Hosting Annual Family Sock Hop Event
It’s time to kick off your shoes, put on your best socks and head to the Sock Hop! On Saturday, February 2 at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium, the LaPorte Chapter of Tri Kappa will be hosting its annual Family Sock Hop. Dr. Groovy & The Soul Surgeons will be performing throughout the evening. There will be refreshments and bake sales items on hand for purchase. Adding to the festivities, children can take part in carnival games, dance contests, and costume contests.

The 2nd annual Discoveries Unlimited Beans & Bags Event will be held at Strongbow Inn Banquet Center on Friday, February 1. Sample several hand crafted Chili recipes and vote for your favorite, and participate in the Corn Hole Tournament.

First Arts and Crafts Fair at Hilltop
Hilltop Neighborhood House is hosting its first Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, February 2nd from noon to 4:00 pm. Come out to Walt's Place to shop one of a kind goodies for Valentine's Day. There will be jewelry, scarves, hair accessories, beauty control, henna, flower pens, baby booties and blankets, mosaic art, quilts, and much much more!

Try Your Hand at Texas Hold'em for Nativity
Join us to help support Nativity School on February 2nd! This 80 seat tournament features a $60 buy in, a $10 chip upgrade and $40 re-buy. 100% of the proceeds goes to Nativity School! There will also be a cash bar, side table games, cash and TV raffles all day.

Farm & Flowers, Reflections of Life in the Country
The Southern Shore Art Association is pleased to present a Solo Exhibition by Lyn Wellsand "Farm & Flowers, Reflections of Life in the Country". This exhibit will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, February 1, from 5-8 pm.

Lubeznik Center for the Arts announces Art of the Valentine, a presentation by Lubeznik Center for the Arts’ Executive Director and vintage valentine collector, Carolyn Saxton, on Sunday February 3, 2013 at 2 pm. The program lasts 90 minutes and will include discussion of the history of valentine art.

Ancient Visions Exhibit at the Hammond Arts Center
The Hammond Arts Center will host an exhibit that explores songs of spirit, nature, and life. The Ancient Visions Exhibit will feature new compositions inspired by the work of the artist Dorothy Graden. An opening reception will be held Friday, February 1.

FREE Family Float Night
Join the Y for some FREE family fun the first Friday of every month at the Portage High School West Pool from 6-8:30 pm. Getting a little exercise and meeting new families is just the start of what's to come.
