A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Lance Bella

We all hope that we will never be in a crisis situation, but if the times comes that you find yourself in a bad situation, would you know what to do? Vertex Improved Performance addresses all the questions associated with being in a crisis situation, and trains businesses and individuals to react appropriately to an emergency situation.

“Vertex is a crisis readiness company. What we do is prepare people for crisis. We do that in three special areas: security, safety and emergency response,” CEO Lance Bella, explained. “We do that through consulting as well as training. I look at all kinds of things including: how do they physically secure their facility? What procedures are in place? What types of access control do they use? What are their hiring practices? Do they secure their data? I look at all these and more. Then I prepare a report to show the client’s strengths as well as where they can improve. Based on this information, I give them suggestions on improvements,” Bella said.

Lance has been in the public safety field for over 30 years before starting his company. His career started when he was 18 years old. Lance worked his way up to a security manager of a grocery chain, and while he was in security management, he was also training to be a firefighter and went to EMT school.

Eventually, he got a job in US Steel Emergency Services. He worked his way up to be the Chief of Emergency Services for the three Indiana facilities. His last two years at the company, was at the corporate level as a Master Chief of Emergency Services for half of North America. The training that he got at the Mills and throughout his experiences helped him develop his business concept.

“Everything we do is designed to deal with crisis. Much of it is preventative. The conflict management training course we offer is a perfect example. Conflict isn’t always a bad thing; you can learn and grow from it. We want to try and teach people how to manage conflict correctly,” Bella said.

Vertex program includes a large range of both services and training courses. Some of the services include: security assessment, safety hazard analysis, personal coaching, efficiency assessment and many more. On the other side of the program, there are training courses including: surviving an active shooter incident, house of worship security awareness, workplace violence prevention, conflict management, and other tailored courses.

“Most companies try to maintain some level of preparedness, but often they don’t know where to start or what to do. I help them to do that. Looking at things that are going on in society today, people don’t know how to respond. I like to tell people don’t simply react to crisis; prepare for it,” Bella said.

The goal for Lance is to get clients trained and moving in the right direction, but ultimately, to prepare them to handle these situations when he’s not there. “In a emergency situation, you will automatically revert to your training. You think you won’t, but if you train correctly, you will remember what you have learned when you toned it,” Bella said.

Knowing how to handle a crisis situation is more vital than ever before. From a small business, to a school and a place of worship, people need to learn the facts and skills to be able to handle any sort of dangerous situation. Coming from a man who has dedicated his career to the safety and education of others, his priority will always be to protect their well being.

“I just always wanted to be able to help people, in one form or fashion, people that couldn’t help themselves. I have always gravitated in that direction. I always try to increase my knowledge and skills to figure out how I can help more and more people,” Bella said.
