#1StudentNWI: Kouts Students Enjoy the Summer at Kouts High School

Dip, Dive, and Enjoy the Rays

It’s everybody’s favorite time of the year! School is out and summer has crashed through the doors. When everybody’s favorite time of the year comes, everybody’s favorite summer activity follows! Swimming! And where do Kouts civilians go when it's hot, and they need a dip? The Kouts pool, of course! With clear blue waters and a lifeguard only on watch, kiddies and adults find themselves spending their free time relaxing at the Pleasant Township pool.

Kouts Is Officially 150!

Did you know that the oldest city in America today is St. Augustine? After being founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon, the city today is over 450 years old. Catching up with St. Augustine is going to be hard, but Kouts is climbing up in it’s age as well! On Saturday, July 18th, the Kouts American Legion is hosting a celebration in honor of Kouts’ turning the big 150. If you’re in the area stop by and enjoy some food and even buy a t-shirt to commemorate Kouts’ big day!

Poms Camp

The Poms team made up of Sarah Cieslak, Paige Gurley, Lauren Keough, Victoria Cross, Delilah Miranda, Gabby Rogers, Haley Gulley, Elizabeth Palmer, Holly Kuebler, and Madison Andrews traveled to Wisconsin Dells for camp July 9th- 12th. In a four day period the girls worked from early in the morning to very late at night, learning new dances and practicing new techniques. At the beginning of camp, the girls underwent an evaluation that resulted in Lauren Keough, Paige Gurley, Sarah Cieslak, and Gabby Rogers receiving pink ribbons that signified they were NDA All American nominees. On the last day of camp, a team is formed consisting of those girls and around four other members. The team did well at obtaining awards and recognition in showmanship and improvement. For all their hard work, the Kouts Poms did get to spend an extra day at the Dells and came home Monday, July 13th.

SQUAD, ATTEN-TION!

“The police officer, who puts their life on the line with no superpowers, no X-Ray vision, no super-strength, no ability to fly, and above all, no invulnerability to bullets, reveals far greater virtue than Superman- who is only a meresuperhero” (Eliezer Yudkowsky). On July 5th- 10th, 22 campers, including myself, had the opportunity to get a peek at life inside a police academy at Saint Joseph’s college. Our counselors were State Troopers themselves and guided us along the way with discipline, integrity, and encouragement. We learned about defense tactics, firearms, and even got a crack at a driving simulator. We also learned to march correctly, and call a cadence, loudly and proudly. But most importantly we learned to be confident. A lot of us were very timid when first starting this camp on the 5th, but by the 10th you could hear us screaming from blocks away. It was truly inspiring and life-changing seeing how a week could change someone. I want to give a personal shout-out to the Troopers and staff who helped not only me, but all the other campers in finding a part of themselves that week. Thank you to Trooper Snyder, Trooper House, Trooper Ellewood, Trooper Henderson, Trooper Bentlige, Mr. Hemingway, and Mr. Arnold.

August Preview

Fried Foods, Rockin’ Roller Coasters, and Competitive Animals

The second favorite time of summer is the ten days when everybody from the county and even further comes down to enjoy the Porter County Fair. With good food, great rides, and sun-kissed memories to share, the fair has never seemed so appealing. As the 4-H members are currently in crunch time, preparing their animals, and people are saving up their money for rides and tickets, the fair could not come soon enough in the mind’s of Porter County citizens. Opening on the night of July 23rd, the fair is sure to be jam-packed, so come on down and enjoy a little piece of Porter County for the evening.

School Registration

It seems as if just yesterday students were dreaming about tanning, beach fun, and sleeping in until noon, but sadly school registration is right around the corner. On August 11th school registration begins for Kouts High School and while some students can’t seem to wait, others are dreading the idea. Enjoy your summer students while you still can!
