#1StudentNWI: Fun Events Happening at Washington Township High School

Running Through the Year

With a 7-2 record, the WT high school boys cross country team is doing well above average this year. Their only two losses have been conference, but that won't stop them. So far this year they have won the Kouts and Rensselaer Invites and it is still early.

Leading the team this year is junior Zack Titus. He has done very well so far. He has won four personal trophies this year, also including being top ten at the New Prairie and Hammond Gavit Invites.

"Our team is great this year. We are doing better than last year. At one of our meets we were top five out of thirty-nine so that was awesome," says Zack.

He has the rest of this year plus one more year to break all of his personal records. However for freshman Matthew Sears he has this year plus three more years to break his PRs.

Matthew says, "I enjoy running, and I love the atmosphere at big races." Matthew also says high school cross country it is more exciting than middle school cross country. His goals in the future are, as a team, win PCC and individually advance to regionals.

Junior Class Fundraiser

This year the juniors are in charge. They have to raise enough money for prom at the end of the year. Junior Nathaniel Steeves has planned a unique way of doing so.

On October 10th, the junior class will be running a Halloween-themed fun fair called Spook Night. It is for the elementary children to play games, wear costumes, and eat candy. This is the first fundraiser of the year, however, they have been raising money for two years now.

Nathaniel says, “If Spook Night is a success then we should be able to raise enough money in time."

This year’s prom should be a hit. The juniors are starting to plan ideas and themes for the end of the year dance. They are working hard to pay the cost now rather than be pressured with it at the end of the year.

A Fan Favorite

Starting out subbing at WT, Kim Brys has definitely grabbed the attention of the students and teachers. When she was hired to be a computer teacher at WT before last school year, she had already been showed the ropes. Being a sub for WT for seven years she had already gotten to know the students and teachers.

Mrs. Brys says,”I loved subbing because I have always wanted to be a teacher. Washington Township is such an amazing school to work at. I enjoy the teachers and students I work with and I am very lucky to be a part of the Senator Staff."

Even though she wasn’t officially a part of the staff she still was treated like one.

With her lab being transformed into a classroom this year, she had moved to the other side of the school.

Mrs. Brys says,”I went from the ICE lab in the middle school hallway to the N115 Office in the high school hallway. I am happy that I moved because now I can work one on one with the students."

Last year Mrs. Brys’ job was to be in charge of the labs, however, this year the high school received Chromebooks for each student to use. Now her job is to be in charge of the student’s and teacher's Chromebooks.

“Last year when I was in charge of the ICE lab I felt more like I was monitoring the kids because I had a whole class come in, but this year I get to work individually with students when they have problems or questions with work or their Chromebooks,“ says Mrs. Brys.

She has definitely been a part of the school before officially becoming a teacher. She hopes to stay working at WT even after her kids graduate.

Carson Cunningham Has Enough on his Plate This Year

Being a sophomore at WT, Carson Cunningham has done a lot this year; from being a girls volleyball and basketball manager to being the President of the Drama Club.

Carson loves choir and drama club. However, music isn’t his only love. He also throws discus in track. He spends every day in the spring after school on the track training for discus.

“I enjoy the competition. Also track is nothing like the other sports, if you mess up in track it doesn't’ affect the whole team," says Carson.

Track keeps him busy in the spring season.

Out of everything he does his favorite thing to do is sing.

Carson says,”I joined choir to have fun and it is truly what I enjoy doing."

He has received a total of five awards for music. Two of the five have been gold from ISSMA. Carson will also be playing a role in the upcoming winter musical.

“I decided to become a manager because it keeps me busy during the fall and winter seasons. I also get to know people better," says Carson. With everything Carson does, he still has time to be a girls volleyball and basketball manager.

Carson likes to be busy. With homework, choir, basketball, volleyball, track, and a life, Carson has no time to even breathe. He has a long year ahead.
