With just a few more weeks left to go in the first trimester, Wheeler High School is progressing along its 2015-2016 school year. Although it feels as if school just started, we are already nearing the 33% mark of the year; nonetheless, many fantastic things have been occurring at Wheeler High School. In terms of latest events, the freshman class is selling Yankee Candles, and October 16 is the last day to place an order; please see Ms. O'Shea for any questions.
National Honor Society members must turn in money or unsold entertainment books to Mr. Boruff as soon as possible. Next, blood drive participants donating blood on October 22 for the American Red Cross must turn in their signed permission forms to Mr. Boruff.
Lastly, all French and German students are invited on a field trip to Valparaiso University’s International Film Fest on October 16 and should see Mrs. Ault for any questions.
In regards to Guidance news, we will have representatives from the following colleges at Wheeler High School during lunch with information. On October 21, students can meet agents from Wabash College. Moreover, Indiana University Northwest Fall Preview Night is Thursday, October 22nd at 5:30; please RSVP by October 19th since application fees are being waived for prospective students. Check out the bulletin board and see the Guidance Office for more details.
Wheeler High School Key Club has been hard at work contributing to their school as well. First, Key Club plans to contribute to the Union Township Middle School Food Drive and the Special Olympics Bowling, both of which will take place on Saturday, November 7. Second, middle school tutoring, which is conducted by Key Club members, has begun and is taking place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, in Miss Jarosz’ room, from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.
This is a great way for students to help other students who are struggling in their classes. Lastly, Key Club week is during the week of November 3rd to November 7th. Monday will be the scavenger hunt, where keys are hidden with various teachers in Wheeler High School and Union Township Middle School. On Tuesday, Key Club members will be packing treats for the school staff in Miss Jarosz’s room from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Wednesday will be when we deliver the goodie bags to all the teachers. Thursday is Make a New Friend Day, where all students are welcomed to say hello to anyone at Wheeler High School they may have previously not had known before. Friday is Do a Good Deed Day, where students are encouraged to help a friend or teacher in any way possible.
Wheeler’s Varsity Football team has vastly improved over the course of its season, with a current record of eight wins and one loss. A week after the Bearcats totaled zero passing yards, the senior quarterback hit six different receivers on Friday during a 10 for 17 performance in which he totaled 223 yards and five touchdown passes. Wheeler triumphed with a win of 51-8 over host Calumet. Quarterback Jake Lafever had passing touchdowns of 32, 15 and 67 yards to Jacob Wasz, Jared Catherman, and Zack Buehler.
As Jake stated, “I told coach Tony Klimczak I wanted to pass and that our team needed to step up its level of gameplay. It’s just the aspect of getting better and wanting to be great. I’m always hungry as an athlete.”
The Wheeler Bearcats are hoping to improve more heading into next week’s sectional opener against Hanover Central.
I would like to give a student shout out to senior Joel O’Shea. A member of Wheeler High School’s cross country team, Joel has many accomplishments in his athletic career. During Highland’s invitational on September 26, Joel took first place on the 3.1-mile course with a time of 16 minutes and 5 seconds, defeating Lowell’s senior Matt Wilson by nearly 15 seconds.
Following the Highland invitation, Wheeler boys cross country coach Luis Guillen stated that he was extremely proud of the hard work and effort Joel had put in. Additionally on October 3rd, Joel won the GSSC cross country conference championship with a time of 16 minutes and 7 seconds. Along with Aiden Hostetler, Joel is a semi-state qualifier and regional runner-up. Wheeler High School congratulates Joel for all of his incredible accomplishments during his cross country seasons.
Lastly, I would like to give a teacher shout out to Teri Anderson. She graduated from Indiana University in 1988 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mathematics and minor in Earth Space Science. Furthermore, she earned a Masters of Education degree in Mathematics in 1993, continued her education and now has a Master’s degree + 15.
The courses that she has taught include the following: 8th-grade mathematics, Pre- Algebra, Consumer Mathematics, ISTEP remediation, Tech prep mathematics, MAPPS, Algebra I, Algebra II, Calculus I, and Calculus II. She has coached the high school mathematics academic team since 2003. The teams have 7 state appearances, earning 3 third places, 1-second place, 2 fourth places, and a 2008 state championship.
Additionally, she has coached the middle school mathematics academic team since 1991; they have earned 11 top ten finishes in state competition with a state championship in 2001. Wheeler High School is extremely thankful for all 27 years of Mrs. Anderson’s teaching career and appreciates everything that she has contributed to our school.
