#1StudentNWI: Prom and Theater Round Out Spring at Boone Grove

Student Spotlight

Mac Magiera is a senior at Boone Grove High School. He is involved in track, soccer, baseball and wrestling. His favorite sport is wrestling because it helps him control his temper and to be physically and mentally tough.

Magiera is also the Vice President of French Club, President of Games Club, President of Garden Club, involved in Student Council, Drama Club, and Vice President of NHS. An interesting fact about Magiera is that he’s had the same lucky number since elementary school and has been that number in every sport he’s played.

He also has a very funny personality, he’s always coming up with cheesy jokes to say during intermissions at plays. Mageria plans on going to Valparaiso University for business management. He’s so ahead of the game that he’s actually taking classes there now. He believes that students should get started on college as soon as possible, even while in high school.

“Be involved in everything possible. You’ll get to meet a lot of new people, plus it looks really good on college applications,” Magiera said.

Teacher Spotlight

1Student-BooneGrove-2018-may-01Katherine Lawrence is one of the history teachers at Boone Grove High School. Lawrence spent most of her life in Northwest Indiana and went to college at IUPUI in Indy before finishing her schooling here at Valparaiso University.

“I had some incredible teachers that changed and saved my life growing up. I have always enjoyed being around kids and this was a logical career path for that," Lawrence said. "I would be able to do what I love while talking about things that I love. I also hoped to give back to kids the way that teachers gave to me growing up. History is just the bomb. There is always something to learn and there are always new things being discovered.”

Lawrence is a fun, inspirational teacher that every student has come to love. Even students who have never had her as a teacher, considering this is her first year, have said she’s amazing.

Lawrence has lived in the Region her whole life, so working at Boone Grove was the most obvious choice.

She said, “It is a very different environment from where I went to high school and where I did my student teaching which I find myself adapting to incredibly well. The other staff and students are incredible and I love how innovative this school system is.”

Lawrence really likes teaching U.S. History, she loves learning about our country because she finds the history unique compared to the rest of the world. Lawrence is the co-sponsor of Natural Helpers with Mr. Isch. An interesting fact is that Ms. Lawrence has been to 35 states and 4 countries, including a choir tour to Italy!
