#1StudentNWI:Welcome Back from Spring Break at Kouts High School

Senior Trip:
The class of 2016 headed off to Washington D.C. for the annual Senior Trip. I interviewed senior, Estela Reis, who experienced this trip and had a blast.

Estela says one of her favorite parts of the trip was George Washington’s house. With big white pillars, red roof, and land to spare, there was no question to why Estela found this to be her favorite part. Estela also loved the wreath laying on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Seniors, Josh Osterhout, Tyler Aiken, Madison Clinton, and Jaela Gudeman took the opportunity to lay the wreath on the tomb with open arms. Overall, it was an amazing trip!

I questioned Estela on if she had any advice to future seniors not wanting to go and she commented, “Don’t not go because you don’t know what to expect and the cost. Yes, it costs money, but it’s really worth it.” Hope you had fun, seniors!

KoutsHSMarch16-2Shout-out to the Honor Society:
On March 12th, the Honor Society banded together to make a change with the annual Food Drive! The students went door-to-door in several different Kouts locations. Kouts residents, generous and giving, donated canned goods like beans, noodles, and even flour! The Honor Society collected over 1,200 items for the Pleasant Township Food Pantry.

Shout-out to Fine Arts:
Big shout-out and congrats to the Fine Arts team for winning third place March 2nd at Porter County School Academic Super Bowl. The team members are Tong Mei Anweiler, Amanda Gardin, Matthew Woodbury, Grace Higbie, and captain Kailee Saulsgiver. Great job, guys! Good luck at the next competition!

Student Shout-out:
PCC-All Conference: A quick and short shout-out to Dylan Bruce, Jared Birky, Emmae Leatherman, and Bella Wireman! Dylan Bruce was selected to be a member of the Porter County Conference All-Conference team this year! Great job, Dylan! Jared Birky was selected to the Academic All-State team as an Honorable Mention Selection by the Indiana Coaches Association. Awesome job, Jared! Seniors Emma Leatherman and Bella Wireman were both selected for the Fillies All-Conference players.

KoutsHSMarch16-3Congrats to Science Fair Participants:
Congratulations and shout-out to all the following Science Fair participants! Third place winners include Max Campbell, Jadon Wright, Tristan Lane, Joey Klein, Blake Jansma, Tyler Schultz, Jack Anderson, Liam Sticker, and Conlan Buss. Second place winners include Ryan Smutniak, Jack Nuest, Matthew Woodbury, Faith Robertson, and Hannah Goff.

First place winners were: Morgan Mills, Lauren Aguirre, Drew Saulsgiver, Josh Hoffman, and Emma Tharp!I interviewed one of the second place winners, Hannah Goff.

Her project was about Reaction Times. Consulting with science teacher, Evelyn Ames, Hannah obtained a reaction time contraption. This machine had a reaction timer installed within it, and would calculate the time it took the participant to pass their hand through the middle of the machine from point A to point B. Hannah’s project spread over a wide range of students. She tested both boys and girls from 6th through 12th grade. Her project concluded that oddly 9th-grade boys had the fastest reaction time overall. However, girls in 11th grade had the fastest left hand! Weird! Congrats to both the boys and girls who placed!

KoutsHSMarch16-4Events Coming Up in April:
There're a couple of major activities around the corner for Kouts High School. One really big project that Student Council has been working on is “Homeless for a Night” event. On April 22nd and 23rd, the Student Council will be hosting an event to spread awareness for homeless people in the Northwest Indiana region. High School students will bring sleeping bags, blankets, and flashlights to the track the night of April 22nd. In order to attend, students will have to donate non-perishable items for Housing Opportunities in Valparaiso. Depending on how much you donate, you could receive a “box”. The more you donate, the bigger of the box you’ll get.

Students will enjoy not only a night amongst friends but also a movie and games on the soccer field. Another big event happening at Kouts soon is the annual Senior Citizen Social.

On April 2nd, 5-7, the Honor Society members will be spending the evening with the snazzy senior citizens of the Kouts residence. Playing games, calling bingo, and spending time with the wisest, the Honor Society is heading for a great evening at the annual social event. One other event coming up is the annual junior job shadow happening on April 8th. Juniors, preparing for their future career, have been given the task to choose a career they hope to pursue and act like it’s a “day on the job”.

April 8th, all juniors will be “pretending” like they are in the life of their future career as they shadow their chosen person. Hope you have fun, juniors! Another event coming up and happening right around the end of April is drama club’s latest theater performance!

This year’s play is centered around a play written by Daniel O’Donnell called Murder by Indecision. With old-timey characters, cheesy puns, and characters on the hunt for a murderer- what more could a crowd ask for?

Finally, the last event coming up is everybody’s favorite event: Prom! That’s right, dresses, dancing, and a little girl’s biggest dream all rolled into one night! This year’s theme- created by fellow students Bailie Frazier, Kyla Roney, and Victoria Cross, is Around the World! How exciting- tickets go on sale next week! So, grab your tickets, get your dress, and head on down to Prom April 16th!
