Alzheimer’s Association Sponsors Education Programs for Families in Northwest Indiana

AlzheimersAssociationThe Alzheimer's Association of Greater Indiana will be holding educational programs on Alzheimer’s, featuring information on a variety of topics that are of interest to all community members with a focus towards caregivers. The programs will be held at various locations throughout Northwest Indiana, including:

3/14: Becoming an Expert Caregiver at 6:00 PM at the Hebron Library, 201 West Sigler Street, Hebron
“Becoming an Expert Caregiver” will empower you with simple techniques to hone in on your loved ones’ strengths and supporting their needs, while maintaining as much independence a possible. Topics include verbal and non-verbal communication, coping with challenging behaviors, wandering and activities of daily life such as bathing, dressing, toileting and eating.

3/16: Veterans Benefits at 2:00 PM at the Dyer-Schererville Library, 1001 West Lincoln Highway, Schererville
Families and professionals are invited to learn valuable information about the veteran’s programs. The focus of this presentation will be on the Veterans Aid & Attendance program which provides tax-free income to veterans and their spouses to pay for health care costs, including home care, assisted living and nursing homes. This program will be presented by Don Schultz, Veteran Service Office for Lake County.

3/16: Making Legal & Life Decisions at 6:30 PM at St. John’s Church, 101 St. John Road, Michigan City
“Making Legal & Life Decisions” will educate attendees about possible care options, legal and financial issues. Topics include various care options, tools to assist in decision making, health care planning and finances. This program will be presented by Elder Law Attorney, Cynthia Hedge.

3/23: Caring for the Caregiver at 2:00PM at the Highland Library, 2841 Jewett Ave., Highland
“Caring for the Caregiver” is a program designed for people who are caring for a loved one with dementia. This workshop explores coping strategies for the caregiver. Topics to be covered include grief, stress management and family dynamics, as well as how to utilize certain resources to help manage the journey.

3/24: Partnering with Your Doctor, 1-3 PM. at the Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson Street, Valparaiso
“Partnering With Your Doctor” is designed for individuals who want to improve how they interact with their doctor, including people with memory loss and/or their care-partners. This workshop will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully improve communication with your physicians and other health care professionals in order to provide the highest quality care possible. Reservations are required for this program as supplies are limited.
