Porter Regional Hospital to Present EMS Symposium Featuring National Speaker

Porter-New-Hospital-Coming-SoonIn recognition of National EMS Week, which runs from May 18 – 24, Porter Regional Hospital will host an EMS Symposium from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21 at Ivy Tech Community College, 3100 Ivy Tech Dr. in Valparaiso. The event is free and complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided.

“Our goal this year was to create an event that would support Porter’s goal of collaborative education and bring together EMS and Fire personnel as well as a variety of healthcare professionals including nurses, respiratory specialists, rehabilitation therapists and many more from across northwest Indiana,” said David Cummins, M.D., EMS Medical Director for Porter Regional Hospital.

The EMS Symposium will feature several multi-disciplinary clinical experts including neurosurgeons and trauma surgeons from Loyola University Medical Center; regional speakers in social work and patient care; and representatives from the Indiana State Department of Health’s Division of Trauma and Injury Prevention. The symposium’s keynote speaker, Gary Ludwig, currently the Deputy Fire Chief with the Memphis Fire Department, has more than 36 years of fire, rescue and EMS experience and is nationally recognized as an expert for pioneering concepts that are now standard practice in Fire and EMS systems today. The symposium is eligible for both CME and Nursing CEUs.

“EMS professionals at the national and state level are becoming more organized, better educated and more efficiently governed,” explained Dr. Cummins. “Porter Regional Hospital is committed to further this development by taking an active role in EMS services throughout our entire region. Excellence in education and training for our region’s EMS providers is of paramount importance to ensure that they are delivering the best possible care in the pre-hospital arena.”
