Franciscan St. Margaret Health: Cancer Survivors have Their Annual Day

2014-Franciscan-Cancer-Survivor-DayParticipants enjoy activities during a recent, annual National Cancer Survivors Day program at Franciscan St. Margaret Health-Dyer that enjoyed a Hawaiian luau theme. The observance has honored patients at Franciscan St. Margaret Health’s Hammond and Dyer campuses for more than 20 years. This year’s theme had coordinated party goods (plates, napkins, tablecloths, balloon centerpieces, favors at each seat) and decorations.

Ice cream was served at a make-your-own sundae bar, along with pineapple upside-down cake. Bingo games with prizes followed the refreshments and 15 gift cards, each valued at $20, were drawn as door prizes. Most of the party items were donated by the staff and physicians of the Oncology Center. Guests also were recognized by years of survivorship, ranging from five to 25-plus.

“We have quite the following now; many have commented that they look forward to the event and participate every year,” said Cindy Duran, Franciscan St. Margaret Health oncology and breast center director, adding, “It is an amazing event – everyone who participates, from the volunteer workers to the families and survivors themselves -- goes home with a good feeling deep down in their soul. Seeing these people on this day is what it’s all about.”
