Porter Health Care System Offers Free Preventive Wellness Screenings

Porter-New-Hospital-Coming-SoonPorter Health Care System will offer bone density and blood pressure, blood sugar, and body mass index screenings in September.

Bone Density
A bone density screening can show low bone mass, revealing your risk for bone-threatening osteoporosis. This screening is performed on the heel of the foot. Participants must be able to remove one sock and shoe. Bone density screenings will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 12 at the Duneland Family YMCA, 215 Roosevelt St in Chesterton.

Blood Pressure/Blood Sugar/Body Mass Index
A blood sugar screening draws a small amount of blood from the tip of the finger. This screening can reveal elevated glucose in the blood, signaling diabetes or prediabetes. A blood pressure test measures the pressure in the arteries as the heart pumps. This screening can indicate ongoing health conditions including prehypertension, hypertension, hypotension, and heart disease. A body mass index (BMI) takes into account your weight and height to indicate body fat, a more accurate way to tell if you are overweight. These screenings will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 8 at the South Haven Public Library, 403 West 700 North in Valparaiso.

Porter Health Care System’s screenings are free and no appointment is necessary.
