Valpo Got a Taste of Healthier Living at Pumps Fitness’ Food Matters Screening

Pumps Fitness held a free viewing session of the documentary Food Matters on Monday. The documentary offers information and research about what everyday citizens put into their bodies.

Pumps Owner and Head Personal Trainer Ian Bowen said, “The documentary discusses the importance of nutritious food and how the pharmaceutical industry is in fact doing more harm to the public than benefiting it. It also reveals the importance of vitamins in everyday life.”

The documentary is representative of what Pumps stands for as a company—leading a healthy lifestyle through nutritious eating habits and exercise. In order to promote healthy living, Pumps offers a variety of programs and classes to fit everyone’s needs. One can find everything from personal training to group fitness programs. This viewing of Food Matters was part of the Pumps Fitness Food Documentary Series, in which community members have the opportunity to watch health based films and ask health and wellness professionals questions.

Co-owner of Pumps Michelle Bowen said, “Rather than focusing solely on pharmaceuticals to treat diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, more and more health experts are looking to an advantageous, balanced lifestyle.”

Pumps Fitness says it is important for accurate health information to circulate amongst the public. In attempt to encourage this, Pumps is teaming up with published author Mari J. Hahn for the Pumps studio “Get Your GUT Back on Track” Workshop, a program on how to help aid the health of the digestive track. Hahn published Gut Guide 101, a book that discusses small changes one can make in his/her diet to lead a healthier life. It also includes a 21-Day-Plan in which one has the opportunity to add gut-friendly foods and supplements without making drastic diet changes.

“It is very important for people to understand the inner workings of their digestive systems,” Hahn stated. “A poorly functioning digestive system is the root cause of many health issues that can easily be prevented. Food Matters heavily focuses on this idea, as well.”

Overall, Pumps Fitness managed to kick off the upcoming summer season in a healthy and educational manner. With the guidance of documentaries and health professionals, Pumps strives to make citizens of Valparaiso one step closer to a healthier and happier life.
