Orthopedic And Balance Therapy Specialists Host ‘Get Rid Of Neck Pain And Headaches’ Workshop

Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists, on Thursday, held a ‘Get Rid of Neck Pain and Headaches’ workshop at their location in Valparaiso. Patients and interested members of the public were welcomed in to come and learn about common causes of neck pain and headaches, the biggest mistakes sufferers make, and what successful treatments are out there.

Arlan Alburo, co-founder of Orthopedic and Balance Therapy Specialists, spoke for around an hour about neck pain and headaches, hands-on manual therapy and what drove him to specialize in physical therapy.

“In 1999, I was in a car accident,” said Alburo. “I thought I felt okay immediately after the car accident but the next day my neck was so sore I couldn’t hardly move it. I had some therapy and the kind of therapy I was getting wasn’t working. That’s when I decided to specialize in manual therapy.”

Alburo attended St. Augustine University and studied under the ‘father of manual therapy’, Stanley Paris, who had founded the university.

“Hands-on, manual therapy is what gets results,” Alburo said. “We employ the European methods of hands-on physical therapy. Manual physical therapy on the joints and muscles in your neck is what it takes to regain pain-free motion. That’s the goal. We don’t just do hands-on physical therapy though. We also do exercises to strengthen your neck muscles. Those muscles need to be trained and exercised. The right kind of physical therapy and exercises will suppress degeneration, as well, and make muscles stronger.”

“It’s really important to focus on postural correction and training,” said Alburo. “It’s difficult to do it immediately. You need to stretch those joints and muscles. That will make the postural correction easier. If you end up going back to your old posture, the same thing will happen all over again. It takes a long time to really stretch the issues in your spine. You have to be very specific to which level you are working at. Doing the right physical therapy is very important. If you are not you can worsen the situation.”

Attending the workshop was Marilyn Plesek, a Valparaiso resident and patient at OBTS.

“I’ve been working on my posture for about two years,” Plesek said. “It works but it takes time. I’m a lot better off now than I was. I’ve been working all this time on my core and would sometimes forget about my posture and it hurts all over again. It takes a few weeks to get used to it and you have to keep at it everyday but it’s worth it.”

Alburo will be hosting another workshop on November 10th that will cover “Back Pain and Sciatica” at their other location at 11055 Broadway Suite B, Crown Point.
