Primary Care Physician Robert Khoury, DO, joins St. Mary Medical Center’s Portage Health Center II

As a new primary care provider at St. Mary Medical Center’s Portage Health Center II, 3545 Arbors Blvd., Robert Khoury, DO, considers himself not just a family doctor, but also a leader in overall care and the prevention of illness and disease. That leadership aspect of general practice is one reason Khoury said he chose to pursue primary care.

“It’s a mix of science and leadership all in one package,” said Khoury, a native of Oakbrook, Ill.

“Part of my job is to be a motivator,” he added. “Annual exams with your primary care provider act as a kind of ‘gatekeeper’ to help you prevent diseases from occurring.”

In addition to practicing family medicine at the Portage Health Center II, Khoury also helps to staff immediate care at the Valparaiso Health Center, 3800 St. Mary Dr. He noted that many patients who come in to immediate care do not already have primary care physicians. He said he is happy to speak with anyone about the importance of having a good family doctor.

St. Mary Medical Center CEO Janice Ryba welcomed Khoury to St. Mary Medical Center and Community Healthcare System, noting that his emphasis on preventative care complements the hospital’s community health mission.

“Our goal at St. Mary Medical Center is to equip patients to make lifestyle choices that will help them remain fit, avoid or manage illness, and maintain health and wellbeing throughout their lives,” Ryba said. “That process begins with excellent primary care. Dr. Robert Khoury is a skilled and personable physician who will assist patients in managing their health outcomes through education and proactive health advocacy. We are excited to welcome Dr. Khoury to our teams at the Portage Health Center II and the Valparaiso Health Center.”

As a Chicagoland native, Khoury has ties to the local area including family in Merrillville and Hobart. That familiarity with Northwest Indiana, plus his positive interactions with other physicians and staff at the hospital and Portage Health Center II, made St. Mary Medical Center the right place to begin his practice, Khoury said.
