Important Annual Check-ups for Seniors

Brookdale-Annual-CheckupVisiting the doctor is important for your loved one to maintain their health and prevent any medical conditions. While residing in assisted living your loved one’s health will be monitored, however it is still necessary for your loved one to schedule tests and check-ups that need to be performed annually by a doctor.

Important annual check-ups you may need to schedule for your loved one include:

Body Statistics

While many of these conditions are checked on regular visits, they are also important to be checked in an annual exam. A significant increase or decrease in height or weight may indicate a problem that a doctor needs to further assess. Blood pressure is another routine check that can be scheduled during any doctor’s visit and should be discussed at your annual check-up.

Blood Test

Blood tests can determine if there is bleeding anywhere within your body. It can also detect kidney problems, heart diseases and any potential thyroid problems.

Cancer Prevention

Checking your body for early signs of cancer can prevent major complications later. Through a variety of tests and check-ups, your loved one can help with early diagnosis and prevention.

  • For Women: Mammograms, PAP smears and pelvic exams can detect cervical or vaginal cancer. Checking bone mass can detect if there is a change in bone density. Less bone density can be a sign of Osteoporosis. Schedule an appointment for your loved to have these exams annually.
  • For Men: A prostate exam also helps to identify the early stages of cancer. Annual exams can help men stay on top of any changes in their health.

While all of these tests may not need to be performed every year, talking to your loved one’s doctor about them is essential. Discuss when tests have last been performed and what the results were. Your loved one’s physician will determine the frequency the tests need to be performed based on past medical and family history and any current medical conditions they suffer from.

While residing in an assisted living community your loved one will have the constant care they need on a daily basis, but these annual examinations can increase overall quality of life for your loved one.
