I was assigned the fun task of attending and covering Terry Abner Salon's 2nd Annual Go Red event. Camera strap around my neck, digital recorder in hand I was ready to snap of dozens of photos and sit down with Terry to here his "back story" as to why he and his wife, Deanna, do so much for Valpo Goes Red (for Women.) On my drive to the salon, I wondered if Deanna battled heart disease, or if it was a mother, sister, or friend. Prepared to hear a sad or inspiring story for the article, I got Terry's attention and was prepared to take notes.
Funny thing though, he didn't have a back story, he didn't have anyone close to him battle heart disease. So, I asked why he did this, and it boils down to he and Deanna, and their staff are good people, doing a good thing, for a good cause, for no other reason than it is the right thing to do.
Terry has been in cosmetology services for over 37 years. Though at the salon, they have male customers and male employees, the majority are female, therefore he wants to not only help them relax and feel beautiful, but help them lead beautiful healthy lives. (Terry also supports various agencies raising funds for breast cancer.) This is the second year Terry has purchased a table for the Go Red breakfast for his employees and hosted a fundraiser at the salon. Somebody approached him about holding an event at the salon last year, and his immediate response was "of course!" Terry went to work securing sponsors for food, and raffle ticket items. Terry and Deanna hope this event will continue to grow, even to the point where they outgrow the salon.
The ticket price was $30 and 100% of the cost of the ticket, was donated to Go Red! Food, beverages, auction items, entertainment and decorations were all donated.
This year food was donated by Dish, Bistro 157, Pikk's, Don Quijote, Edible Arrangements, Abigail's, and Bon Femme. The salon provided the beverages. A raffle was held throughout the evening, and all proceeds from ticket sales were donated to Go Red! Items were donated from The Barbauld Agency, Bohemian Street, Bangles, Diane Kemp, Gold Canyon Rep. Mary Ruiz, Beyond Pink, Porter County Museum, Woof Luxury Unleashed, Waves of Wellness, ValpoLife, artist Deanna Abner and Terry Abner Salon. In addition to musical entertainment by Keenan Baxter, Sequence (a Sweet Adeline group) and Jon Costas & Bill Hanna, a few vendors sold items with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Go Red! Both Bangles and Denise Stewart of Premier Jewelry were hand on to sell some beautiful accessories. Finally, we don't want to fail to mention Hidden Garden for donating some beautiful floral arrangements. Terry and Deanna hope this event will continue to grow, even to the point where they outgrow the salon.
As you peruse the photos, pay special attention to the painting. It was created by Deanna Abner and if you look closely you can see all the major sponsors of the event on this simply cool piece of art. The painting was auctioned through a silent auction, and as you may have already guessed, all the money raised ($300) will be donated to.....Go Red! This one evening event raised over $2000 for Go Red! Click here to view more photos!
