Joy School Students Donate $212 to Pay for Mammograms for Underprivileged Women

Joy-Elementary-Franciscan-Fundraiser-2012Michigan City Joy Elementary School students pay 50 cents to wear jeans to school on the first and third Fridays of month, to help raise funds for community causes.

In just two of those days, they raised $212 that was donated on Nov. 13 to Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City to be used to help pay for mammograms for women who otherwise cannot afford them.

The collection was taken during in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Fifth-grader Ryan Utapel, a member of the school’s Culture and Climate Committee, presents a check to Trish Weber, hospital vice president of operations and chief nursing officer, who led a contingent of Franciscan St. Anthony Health representatives on hand at an assembly in the gym. Weber told the crowd of students how much their effort will mean to the women it will help. ​
