Allergy Center Opens at St. Catherine Hospital

Adult & Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor Offers Same-Day Testing & Autoimmune Therapy

chs home bannerWith one in three Americans suffering from some form of allergy, and doctor-diagnosed environmental allergies affecting one in about 50 adults, Dr. Kedar Kakodkar is taking an active role to diagnose and treat allergies in Northwest Indiana.

This week, he opened an Allergy Testing & Treatment Center in the Professional Office Building of St. Catherine Hospital, 4320 Fir St., Suite 410, East Chicago.

A fellowship-trained adult and pediatric ear, nose and throat doctor in Northwest Indiana, Kakodkar offers expertise in environmental allergies, allergy shots, sinusitis, anaphylaxis, eczema, hives, angioedema, asthma and immunodeficiency.

“I’m excited to provide Northwest Indiana with a comprehensive allergy testing and treatment center for patients of all ages,” Kakodkar said. “Allergy treatment can potentially allow patients to build up their immunity and get off allergy medications completely.”

The new Allergy Testing & Treatment Center has two exam stations where patients are tested for different types of allergy triggers, including tree, grass and weed pollen, mold spores, cats and dogs, environmental substances and fungus.

Patients ages 6 and up will be treated at the center.

“We test for 60 of the most common allergens in Northwest Indiana,” Kakodkar said. “We provide patients with same-day results.”

Allergies to the environment or to other triggers can have potentially adverse consequences for thousands of children, adults and seniors living in Northwest Indiana. “The Allergy Testing & Treatment Center is an important extension of the outpatient medical services offered by St. Catherine Hospital and the Community Healthcare System,” said Craig Bolda, chief operating officer of St. Catherine Hospital.

“Diagnosing and managing allergic conditions, particularly in children and in adults who suffer from environmental allergies, is especially important,” Bolda said. “We are very fortunate to have the expertise of Dr. Kakodkar.”

Allergies are on the rise, and they affect as many as 30 percent of adults and 40 percent of children, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Allergic disease, including asthma, is the third most common chronic disease in children under 18 years.

The Allergy Testing & Treatment Center is currently accepting new patients. For more information, call 219-392-7665.

St. Catherine Hospital is part of the Community Healthcare System, which also includes Community Hospital in Munster and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart.
