Pink Ribbon Society Donation Supports St. Mary Medical Center Breast Cancer Patients

The Women’s Diagnostic Center of St. Mary Medical Center received a donation of $5,000 from the Pink Ribbon Society to fund screening mammograms and breast ultrasounds for patients who are underinsured, along with providing Pink Pockets for breast cancer patients.

“As insurance costs rise, many women are choosing to forgo these screenings to save money,” said Donna Faitak, supervisor at the Women’s Diagnostic Center. “This is a risky choice, as these tests can be lifesaving, detecting cancer early when it is most treatable. The donation from the Pink Ribbon Society will help underwrite the costs and allow these patients to receive needed imaging services.”

In addition to the screenings, the funds will be used to purchase Pink Pockets, removable, washable pockets for women who have recently undergone breast cancer surgery. The pockets are made of soft flannel and adhere inside of clothing to hold surgical drains.

“Pink Pockets are a comfort to our breast cancer patients, helping them to feel more normal after a major surgery,” said Faitak. “The cumbersome drains are discreetly held in place and are easily accessible for emptying purposes. We are very grateful to the Pink Ribbon Society for their support.”

“We are very excited to assist St. Mary Medical Center’s breast cancer patients,” said Ann Peters, founder and president of the Pink Ribbon Society. “Pink Pockets fills an immediate need for women following their mastectomies. This is the mission of the Pink Ribbon Society – although we promote the importance of breast self-examination and mammograms, our focus is on supporting mastectomy patients following their surgery. This is a difficult time for these women and we want to help make their recovery a little bit easier.”
