A new cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment is now available in NW Indiana for men looking to treat their enlarged prostate symptoms without the risks and complications associated with surgery.
The Vascular & Interventional Institute, sister practice to the Vein & Laser Institute, is the ONLY private practice in NW Indiana and Chicagoland to offer this lifechanging alternative for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate.
Prostate Artery Embolization(PAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat BPH and improve lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) like urinary frequency, inability to urinate, incomplete emptying of bladder, difficulty starting urination, straining to urinate, or a weak urine stream caused by an enlarged prostate.
Using a local anesthetic, an interventional radiologist inserts a catheter (a thin, hollow tube) into a patient’s upper thigh or wrist, accessing his arteries. Using X-ray imaging, he guides the catheter to the blood vessels feeding the prostate and injects them with microspheres, reducing the blood supply, shrinking the prostate and alleviating symptoms without the trauma of surgery.
With very low rates of urinary incontinence or sexual dysfunction (complications associated with surgical options) and no catheter required post-procedure, patients return to their normal lives much sooner than with traditional surgical options.
Almost half of men ages 51-60 and as many as 90 percent of men aged 70-89 suffer some symptoms of BPH. With a high rate of success, few side effects and a swift recovery, PAE is an attractive option for men suffering from an enlarged prostate who want to treat their symptoms with minimal disruption to their lives.
