St. Catherine Hospital Sponsors ‘Health Zone’ at Kawann Short Stem Expo & Youth Football Camp

St. Catherine Hospital is teaming up with Carolina Panthers Defensive Tackle Kawann Short Sat, July 7, for the STEM Expo + Youth Football Camp, held at East Chicago Central High School, 1100 W. Columbus Dr.

As a platinum sponsor of the event with USA Football Fundamental, St. Catherine Hospital and Community Healthcare System staff will provide athletic trainers as well as health related information for more than 300 children and parents attending the free event.

A Health Zone, offered by St. Catherine Hospital at the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Expo will provide hands-on activities to teach children, ages 8-16, about proper hydration, nutrition, foot care for athletes, yoga/stretching techniques, cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

While student athletes are on the football field or engaged in STEM activities in the high school gymnasium, parents can visit the Mini-Theater from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. and 12:20 to 1:30 p.m. for a series of short talks from Community Healthcare System physicians and healthcare providers on ways to keep their young athletes safe and healthy on and off the playing field.

Brief presentations will be given on concussion symptoms and treatment, sports injuries, dealing with an athlete with asthma, allergies, sleep apnea or sinusitis, recognizing stress and player burn-out and cardiac wellness for athletes.

“We are proud to sponsor an event that sends a strong message and timely tips on ways to be a well-rounded athlete when it comes to sports, education and good health,” said Leo Correa, CEO, St. Catherine Hospital.

Community Healthcare System’s John Doherty, Vice President Therapy Services, Sports Medicine and Occupational Health, and a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Licensing Board, will welcome guests and introduce the hospitals’ medical and professional staff members giving presentations.

Speakers include: Joseen Bryant, MD, sports medicine, Concussion Clinic; Daniel Woods, MD, sports medicine, orthopedic surgeon; Kedar Kakodkar, MD, ear/nose/throat specialist; P. Ramon Llobet, MD, cardiology and interventional cardiology and Jake Messing, LCSW, Behavioral Health Services.

Concussion Clinic personnel and athletic trainers will offer hands-on compression simulation training as a response to cardiac arrest and will present camp participants with a free, “Back to Sports” handbook to help keep athletes healthy and in the game. The 24-page handbook was produced by the American Health Association and National Football League as a resource for parents, coaches and youth on sports safety, concussion facts, dehydration prevention, pediatric overuse injury prevention, cardiac arrest and proper response, healthy post-play snacks and wallet cards for emergency information and contacts.

Registration for participants was required in advance and the event is filled to capacity. To learn more about Community Healthcare System, visit comhs.org
