Northwest Indiana Nephrology's New Munster Dialysis Center Showcases New Standard for Renal Care

Many dialysis patients spend three or more hours three times a week at a dialysis center getting essential, lifesaving treatment. For these patients, little is more important than than a modern, comfortable facility with friendly and trustworthy staff. On July 31, the American Renal Associates and Northwest Indiana Nephrology opened their brand new, large-scale dialysis center to the public for an open house to showcase a new standard in the region for renal care.

The Munster Dialysis Center is connected directly to Northwest Indiana Nephrology’s Munster Office as a part of the Munster Kidney Center, located right off Calumet Avenue. The open house allowed current and potential dialysis patients to get a close look at the brand new facility, as well as a chance to meet the staff.

“We want our patients to experience a welcoming, home-like atmosphere,” said Jane Lloyd, Practice Operations Manager for Northwest Indiana Nephrology. “We want them to enjoy coming in, not dread it. Patients are the reason we’re here, we want them to understand that we care about them and their choices.”

The best equipment, a clean and beautiful facility, and a direct connection to the office that plays host to some of the Region’s top renal physicians, like Drs. Steven Mischel and Vipuj Shah, are all available to patients at the Munster Dialysis Center. Care is completely comprehensive, and the team makes sure the patient’s family is involved every step of the way.

“For me, what’s special is that we’re able to ‘treat’ the entire family,” said Lucy Cole, Registered Dietician. “We get to make that connection with their entire family, because they’re so important to the patient—because dialysis carries so much into the home.”

From registration to treatment, every part of the experience at Northwest Indiana Nephrology and the Munster Dialysis center is focused on patient comfort. Those new to dialysis treatments start off training in the facility’s “home treatment” section, which offers more private care to ease patients into the process. Yet hat makes treatment at the Center truly special is not the equipment or building, but the sense of community fostered by the patients and staff.

“We get to know everyone as a person, not just a patient,” said Michael Messler, Registered Nurse. “We develop a bond not only from staff to patient, but patient to patient. We become more than just a medical facility, we’re a family and we work together. It’s not an assembly line.”
