With haunted miniature golf, hayrides, a costume contest, and a trunk-or-treat path, there was no better place to spend the evening. No matter what age, Zao Island was the perfect place to bring together families and friends.

The girls passed out Gatorade, water, and snacks as well as cheered the riders on their journey. When that job was done, they helped adult volunteer Joe Baker refinish the camp stage. Mr. Baker taught beginner painting skills that helped complete the job quicker.

Valpo Girl Scouts Win Float Award in 2017 Popcorn Fest Parade

Valpo-Girl-Scouts-Win-Float-Award-in-2017-Popcorn-Fest-ParadeThe Valparaiso Area Girl Scouts were awarded the “Best Little Kernel Award” for their float entry in the Popcorn Festival Parade on Sept. 9th. With the theme “Faces of Girl Scouting,” the float depicted 4 life-sized Girl Scouts decorated in cornmeal, popcorn, other corn products. A Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette Girl Scout circled round and round as they made their way through the parade route. The traditional Girl Scout trefoil showed the faces of many of our local girls and adults who live in Valparaiso and Washington Twp.

The Valpo Parks Popcorn Panic and Lit’l Kernel Puff Race are both highly anticipated events at the Popcorn Festival each year. A fun, local tradition that gets many out of the house, into the community, and moving through the streets, it’s been a long-standing event to which Valparaiso residents look forward. For many, the Lit’l Kernel Puff race is a fun novelty that they get to participate in each year. For others, though, the races have become something even more. The Lit’l Kernel Puff Race was something fun and exciting for Lisa Baisden, Youth Recreation Director for Valpo Parks, as a child, and now she’s directing it and helping others make those same memories.
