Nicholas Henton (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle H.S.) hauled in Valparaiso’s lone touchdown on Saturday afternoon as Dayton defeated the Crusaders 38-7 at Brown Field to spoil Parents’ Day for the Brown and Gold.

Henton made a 28-yard scoring grab on a pass from Nate Goergen (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) on the first play following a Nikko Carson (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township H.S.) fumble recovery in Flyer territory.

The fumble recover was one of three turnovers the Crusaders forced in the opening half. The first came on Dayton’s second drive of the game as Roger Satur (Mansfield, Texas/Nolan Catholic H.S.) stripped Flyer ball carrier Dan Jacob at the goal line and Zac Griffin (Apple Valley, Calif./Granite Hills H.S.).

Satur also picked off his second pass in as many weeks late in the second quarter.

“In the first half we did a good job of forcing turnovers,” head coach Stacy Adams said. “However, offensively we need to take the momentum from that, move the ball, and capitalize.”

Dayton’s defense held Valpo to just 60 total yards of offense for the game and just two first downs.

Steve Valentino put the Flyers on top with a pair of first half touchdowns, one on a one-yard quarterback sneak and another on a 42-yard run. He also added his third touchdown of the game to open the third quarter after Dayton had a 17-7 lead at intermission.

Brandon Wingeier had a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the third and Jacob added a score in the fourth quarter.

Dayton (6-1, 4-0 PFL) racked up 476 yards of total offense, including 271 on the ground. Valentino carried 17 times for 127 yards while also completing 13-of-18 passes through 188 yards through the air.

Isaac Wildermuth (Sidney, Ohio/Upper Arlington H.S.) had 12 carries for 24 yards to lead Valpo’s offense while Goergen was 4-of-12 passing for 33 yards. Henton had four receptions on the day.

Valparaiso (1-6, 0-4) will take to the road for the next two weeks, heading to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. next Saturday for an 11 a.m. CDT game against Marist.

Game Notes: Laurence Treadaway (Detroit, Mich./Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s H.S.) blocked a field goal attempt, his first career block … Kyle Himmelwright (Coplay, Pa./Whitehill H.S.) returned the block 57 yards … Mitch Secrest (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland H.S.) punted a season-high 12 times for a 35.8-yard average, including a long of 48 … Eli Crawford (Bogart, Ga./North Oconee H.S.) led the Crusaders with seven tackles … Dayton leads the all-time series 17-2 and has won six straight.
