Opportunity Enterprises, Inc. is the recipient of an $83,500 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant funded through the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and administered in Indiana by the Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED). A total of $2.85 million was awarded for energy efficiency upgrades to existing structures across the state. “Sometimes the cost of energy efficiency can seem too much for smaller companies, health care facilities, colleges, and universities or non profit agencies already struggling in these economic times,” said Lt. Governor Becky Skillman. “These grants can be a bridge from short term financial issues to important long term energy savings.” The grant funding, supported with a 50 percent local match, will be used to replace HVAC units and split heating and air conditioning units located at Opportunity Enterprises’ facility at 2801 Evans Avenue in Valparaiso. The current units are highly inefficient, both financially and environmentally, and will be replaced with 90 percent efficiency equipment. Installation is slated to take place in September of this year. The Office of Energy Development (OED) was created in December 2005 as an extension of the Indiana energy office. Under the leadership of Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, OED is responsible for the state’s energy policy. For more information, please visit www.energy.in.gov. Opportunity Enterprises is a not-for-profit organization that creates sustainable life choices for individuals with challenges and disabilities. Since 1967, OE has provided quality employment, enrichment, and residential services for individuals with developmental disabilities. More than 1,000 children and adults throughout Northwest Indiana receive services on an annual basis. For more information, please visit www.oppent.org. |
