Ceramic products, for the most part, require minimal maintenance. Glazed and unglazed tile, under normal residential situations, can be cleaned using clean water and a tile cleaner recommended by the manufacturer. Always follow up with a rinse of clean water to completely remove all the cleaning solution. Regular maintenance is recommended to avoid build-up of dirt, residue, grease, soap, detergents, or other external contaminants.
Improper maintenance and improper cleaning products can result in a build-up on the surface, causing the tile to be slippery. Wax cleaners and oil-based detergents may decrease the slip resistance and are not recommended for use on your ceramic tile.
For basic cleaning, the following procedures are recommended:

Shades of Gray began as The Front Porch Music “house band” when Paul and Jane Schreiner were the owners of the Valparaiso, IN, music store/venue between 1991 and 2007. At the weekly Thursday night open stages held there the Schreiners met singer/songwriter Dave Farris. The mutual admiration they held for each other led to an eventual collaboration of Dave’s rich, folky lead vocals, Jane’s solid harmony, and Paul’s instrumental decoration. Both Dave and Paul are finger style guitarists.
The blend of the two guitars – Dave’s large, self-built dreadnaught-like cut-away and Paul’s “O” sized 12 fret Martin – is magical with the sum being greater than the combination of the parts. Jane began singing harmony parts in a Lutheran grade school in central Texas, and then with her two younger sisters. Participation in high school band, choir, and eventually junior college choir and various vocal ensembles further developed her ability to hear harmonic possibilities.
Shades of Gray recorded their first CD in 2010. Titled Way Down Deep, it contains seventeen of Farris’ original songs, vivid recollections of growing up in the Deep South, living in rural Michigan and coming of age in the turbulent 60’s.

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is the site for a series of art classes beginning this October. Made possible by a partnership between Taltree and South Shore Arts, the three Saturday morning sessions feature an introduction to mixed media. According to Linda Eyermann of South Shore Arts, students will grow artistically as they create art in the inspirational setting of Taltree.
Oil, pastel, prisma color, watercolor, pen & ink—be creative in any of the media mentioned above. As a beginner students will learn the basic technique of painting and how to use color to create a beautiful piece of art. Intermediate and advanced students will learn how to analyze subjects, work from the imagination and enhance their paintings.
The first of these five-session classes begins October 9 and is geared toward adults age 15 and up. A youth class for ages 7 – 14 follows beginning January 15, 2011. Another adult series begins March 5, 2011. Classes are from 10 – 11 a.m. and will be held on consecutive Saturdays in Taltree’s Railway Garden Depot.
