RedHawks Take Down IIT as Holland Surpasses 1,000 Points

iun-holland-1000-pointsThe IU Northwest RedHawks wasted little time on Saturday taking control of their matchup with Illinois Tech (IIT) dominating the Scarlet Hawks 90-34 en route to their 12th win of the season. IU Northwest (12-6) jumped put to an early double-digit lead in the first half and and never looked back to win their third straight game. The RedHawks led 55-17 at the break.

Senior center and former IIT Scarlet Hawk Valerie Zulevic led the RedHawks with 18 points and 12 rebounds while senior forward Megan Holland surpassed 1,000 career points in the win, posting 17 points on the afternoon in leading the RedHawks. Holland transferred to IU Northwest from Kalamazoo Valley Community College where she starred for the Cougars totaling 307 points during the 2011-12 season en route to All-Conference Honors.

Holland has now totaled 672 points in her two seasons with the RedHawks to push her over 1,000 for her career.. Holland in the midst of her second straight outstanding season for IU Northwest, the First-Team All-A.I.I. has shot 62% from the floor since joining the RedHawks.

"Megan has been a very special player for us in her two seasons with the RedHawks Extremely talented, she's a great player and teammate and had led us to big wins and a resurgent season and deserves to be an All-American this year. On behalf of IU Northwest, her teammates and coaches we congratulate Megan on her accomplishment and a great milestone in her collegiate basketball career," said IU Northwest head Coach Ryan Shelton.

In the game, the IU Northwest held IIT to just 19% shooting from the floor and forced 30 Scarlet Hawk turnovers. The game was a homecoming of sorts for former IIT standout volleyball and basketball player and South Side native, RedHawks senior center Valerie Zulevic who posted a game-high 18 points on 9-13 shooting. "Val came ready to play today," added Shelton

IUN placed four players in double figures with freshmen guards Nicki Monahan and Bernadette, 11 points each who joined Holland and Zulevic. IUN connected on 36-73 from the floor and 14-18 from the line.

IU Northwest currently receiving votes again this week in the NAIA Top 25 National Poll returns to action this Monday when they travel to Milwaukee, WI to square off with the No. 6 Cardinal Stritch Wolves (17-1) for a 5 p.m. CT tip.
