Head Coach Tom Megyesi Named to Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame

PUC-PeregrinsPurdue University Calumet women's basketball head coach Tom Megyesi can add another honor to his storied career, as the eighth-year head coach was one of 10 selected to the 2015 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Induction Class, as announced by the organization's board of directors Tuesday.

The class will be officially honored in a special ceremony held Saturday, April 25, at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in Newcastle, Ind.

Before Megyesi became Purdue Calumet's all-time winningest coach, he spent 24 seasons (1982-2006) at the helm of the Lake Central High girl's basketball squad, leading the Indians to the 1994 IHSAA state championship. Lake Central compiled a 370-164 (.693) record in that span, which also included 11 sectional championships, four regional titles, three semi-state crowns, and a state runner-up finish in 1998.

The Okemos, Mich., native received numerous coaching honors during his tenure at Lake Central, highlighted by his Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and 1998. Megyesi finished his Indiana high school coaching career with 380 wins, which included one season at Washington Township.

At Purdue Calumet, Megyesi has built the Peregrines into a legitimate national contender, leading the women's basketball team to a 25-7 record in 2013-14, which included a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championship and a trip to the NAIA Division II Sweet Sixteen. His last three teams have won at least 20 games each season, and Megyesi has coached 24 All-CCAC selections, two NAIA All-Americans, and seven 1,000-point scorers. In 2013-14, Megyesi earned his first CCAC Coach of the Year and NAIA Region IV Coach of the Year awards. He currently holds a 128-100 overall record at Purdue Calumet.

This season, the Peregrines are off to a 10-2 start, including a perfect 5-0 start in conference play. The Peregrines are currently ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

In order to be nominated for selection into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, coaches are eligible after 25 years of varsity coaching experience or 10 years after retirement from high school coaching.
