Crusader Men Pick up Four Wins at IPFW Duals

VU-Crusader-Men-Pick-up-Four-Wins-at-IPFW-DualsThe Valparaiso men’s track and field teams went 4-0 on Friday at the IPFW Duals with four individuals winning titles. They defeated Horizon League foes Oakland and Detroit, 83-57 and 74-69 respectively, while also downing in-state rivals Butler 88-44 and IUPUI 94-23.

Gaberial Williams swept the titles in the horizontal jumps, leaping 5.91m/19-4.75 in the long and 11.96m/39-3 in the triple jump. Colton Hill finished just behind Williams in the long jump with his jump of 5.78m/18-11.75.

In the pole vault, Justin Zosso (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) set a new meet record as he won his third title in four meets with his mark of 4.40m/14-5.25, besting the previous meet record by over four inches. Nicholas Stack (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) finished right behind him with his height of 4.25m/13-11.25.

In the sprints, Anthony Franze (Gunter, Texas/Gunter) blazed his was to the 200 meter dash title with his 23.01, while also finishing second in the 60m (7.24). Josh Carrow (Greenwood, Ind./Indianapolis Lutheran) had a pair of top-eight finishes as he finished seventh in the 400m (52.72) and eighth in 60m (7.84).

In the long distance events, Adam Bruno (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) finished in sixth place in the 3000m (9:07.47) and seventh in one mile, (4:24.06).

The Crusaders were well represented in the throwing events, as Jacob Smutz (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Jacob Frey (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) finished second (16.70m/54-9) and third (15.53m/50-11) in the weight throw, respectively.

Andrew Guezk (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and Isaiah Cook took fourth (14.93m/48-11) and fifth (14.59m/47-10), respectively. Guzek also finished third in the shot put (13.95m/44-7) while Cook finished two spots behind him (13.11m/43-0.25).

In the high jump, Johnathan Heagy and Elijah Owen (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) took home second and third place with heights of 1.83m/6-0 and 1.78m/5-10, respectively.

Valpo returns to the track on Friday, Jan. 30, when they travel to the Findlay Open in Findlay, Ohio.
