Crusaders Take Flight at Purdue

VU-Crusaders-Take-FlgihtThe Valparaiso men’s and women’s track and field teams took part in the first day of action at the Fred Wilt Invitational at Purdue University on Friday. Multi-events, the pole vault, and the weight throw were the only events taking place on day one.

Reigning Horizon League Athlete of the Week Justin Zosso (Chesterton, Ind./Chesteron) finished in a tie for fifth in the pole vault with his mark 4.87m/15-11.75.

In the weight throw, Jacob Smutz (West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) took fourth with his toss of 18.66m/61-2, while Jacob Frey (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville Area) finished one spot behind with his heave of 16.75m/54-11.

The duo of Isaiah Cook (Granger, Ind./Penn) and Chris Sosnowski (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield Central) threw 16.27m/53-4 and 15.44m/50-8 to take eighth and ninth place, respectively.

On the women’s team, Megan Howdeshell (Bourbon, Ind./Triton Junior-Senior) improved her third best mark in Valpo history in the weight throw with her toss of 16.03m/52-7 as she took 14th place. She was the only competitor from the women’s team on day one.

The Crusaders return for day two at Purdue on Saturday. Action starts at 9:00 am with the heptathlon 60m hurdles and the women’s high jump and running events will begin at 10:30 am. Live results will be available through ValpoAthletics.com.
