Gomez Barrientos Sets Three Records to Lead Valpo at HL Championships

VU-Gomez-Barrientos-Sets-Three-Records-to-Lead-Valpo-at-HL-ChampionshipsThe Valparaiso swimming teams continued to see records fall on the third day of competition at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis.

In the women’s 100 yard butterfly, Dani Gomez Barrientos (Mexico City, Mexico/Grandview Prep. [Fla.]) continued her overtake the Crusader record book in her first Horizon League Championships as she set the school record in 57.01 and finished in 11th place. She bested the previous record by over a second.

The women’s 800 yard freestyle relay of Gomez Barrientos, Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan), Emily Trimpe (), and Cannon broke the school record by almost seven seconds as they finished in 7:38.58 to take sixth place. Gomez Barrientos broke the 200 yard freestyle record as she recorded a 1:54.43 split.

Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep.) bettered his school record in the men’s 100 yard backstroke by a tenth of a second. He touched the wall in 51.29 and finished in 11th place.

The women’s 800 yard freestyle relay of Gomez Barrientos, Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan), Emily Trimpe (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), and Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) broke the school record by almost seven seconds as they finished in 7:38.58 to take sixth place. Gomez Barrientos also broke the 200 yard freestyle record as she recorded a 54.43 split.

Cannon took 14th in the women’s 100 yard butterfly as she finished in 1:06.58.

Zach Zerenchel (Rockford, Ill./Hononegah) finished 16th in the men’s 400 yard IM, touching the wall in a personal best 4:14.67.

Fred Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) swam a 57.42 in the finals of the men’s 100 yard breaststroke to finish in 16th. He swam a 56.91 in the prelims.

The men’s team of Arman Salim (Angola, Ind./Fremont), Matt King (Clinton, Ind./Clinton), Alec Domjan (Jackson, Mo./Notre Dame Regional), and Trent Chamness (Elkhart, Ill./Concord) took seventh in 7:08.10, the ninth fastest time ever at Valpo.

The men stood pat in seventh place with 81 points while the women have 120 points and are in eighth place after three days of championship competition.

Valpo returns to the pool for the final time on Saturday for the fourth day of the Horizon League Championships. Prelims and time trials begin at 10:30 am CT with finals starting at 7:00 pm. Links to live video and results will be available at ValpoAthletics.com.
