Owen Sets School Record on Final Day of HL Championship

VU-Owen-Sets-School-Record-on-Final-Day-of-HL-ChampionshipThe Valparaiso men’s track and field team concluded the Horizon League Indoor Championship today in fourth place with 59 points at Youngstown State on Sunday.

Elijah Owen (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) set the school record in the heptathlon with 4,413 points, taking second place. He won the pole vault 3.83m/12-6.75 and finished fourth in the 1000 meter run (2:54.70). Cameron Beisel (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) took fifth – and set the fifth best mark in Valpo history – with 3,766 points.

Brandon Riley (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) improved his Crusader best in the 400 meter dash by two tenths of a second as he finished fifth in 49.52.

Andrew Guzek (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) jumped from seventh to fourth place in the shot put on his fifth attempt with his moonshot of 14.94m/49-0.25. He improved his fifth best mark at Valpo by eight inches. Isaiah Cook (Granger, Ind./Penn) and Brayden Smith (Crawfordsville, Ind./North Montomery) both threw season bests 14.02m/46-0 and 14.02m/46-0 and 13.34m/43-9.25, respectively.

Adam Bruno (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) finished the mile in a season best time of 4:21.04 to take tenth place.

The 4x400m relay of Riley, Josh Carow (Greenwood, Ind./Indianapolis Lutheran), Ben Zibricky (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), and Kurtis Slenk (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) set the fourth fastest time in school history with their 3:24.34. They took sixth place in the race.

The Crusaders start their outdoor season in a fortnight when they travel to the Butler Opener on March 21.
