Crusaders Split Doubleheader with Miami, Wheaton

VU-Crusaders-Split-Doubleheader-with-Miami-WheatonThe Valparaiso men's tennis team earned a split in its doubleheader Tuesday, defeating Wheaton College 6-1, but falling 6-1 to the University of Miami.

Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) recorded wins in both his singles and doubles matches. With the victories, Schorsch is now 19-6 in singles play and 21-4 in doubles action.

The Crusaders opened the day with an 11:30 am ET/10:30 am CT showdown against the Miami Hurricanes. Schorsch and teammate Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) began the match with a 6-2 win over Henrique Tsukamoto/Piotr Lomacki at No. 1 doubles. Miami rallied back with triumph at Nos. 2 and 3, however, to secure the doubles point.

Wilfredo Gonzalez/Kevin Bondar defeated Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and Danny Oakes (Elburn, Ill./Saint Charles North) 6-3 at No. 2 before Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjam got past Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland)/Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli), 6-4, at No. 3.

Singles play commenced with Miami's Niclas Genovese collecting a 6-2, 6-2 result over Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) at No. 6.

Schorsch made quick work of Tsukamoto at No. 2 singles, defeating the senior 6-2, 6-2.

Bernand Tefel gave the Hurricanes a commanding 3-1 lead at No. 5 following his 6-3, 6-0 dismissal of Emhardt. Lomacki clinched the match for the home team thanks to a 6-4, 6-3 win versus Bacalla.

No. 4 singles play saw Bondar defeat Gardner, 6-2, 6-2. Morning play concluded with Gonzalez nabbing a 6-4, 6-1 victory versus Dunn at No. 3.

Valparaiso got back on the winning track in the afternoon portion of the doubleheader, handing Wheaton College a 6-1 loss.

Playing at No. 1 doubles, Bacalla/Gardner gathered a 6-2 victory over Josh Ward/Karl Wenzel. The Crusaders put the doubles point in their back pocket after Dunn and Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) scored a 6-4 win at No. 2 versus Justin Ancona/Matt Steiner.

Hamilton made quick work of Lincoln Metz, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Savaglio put Valpo on top 3-0 following his 6-4, 6-4 result against Ancona.

Dunn supplied the match-clinching point at No. 1 singles, beating Ward, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1. Brian Hickey (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) added a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 5 versus Wenzel.

Steiner put the Thunder on the board with a hard-fought 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 win against Waak. Oakes rounded out the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory versus Derek Mumaw.

Valpo (13-3) ends its spring trip Wednesday with another twinbill. The Crusaders will face Lehigh at 8:00 am ET/7:00 am CT before taking on the College of Wooster in the afternoon.
